Carlos Slim on Employment as Charity
on Monday, June 24, 2013Carlos Slim Money Quotation saying he isn’t going to contribute by giving as much of his wealth as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have committed to giving to charity (half their fortunes). Carlos Slim said:
“The only way to fight poverty is with employment. Trillions of dollars have been given to charity in the last 50 years, and they don’t solve anything. — Carlos Slim
In this quote, Carlos Slim is arguing that charity alone is not an effective long-term solution for poverty. While trillions of dollars have been donated over 50 years, poverty still exists on a large scale. Instead, he asserts that “the only way to fight poverty is with employment” – by creating jobs and economic opportunities that allow people to earn a living and become self-sufficient.
Slim implies that handouts or donations only provide temporary relief but do not address the root causes or enable true independence from aid. Employment, on the other hand, can provide people with skills, wages, experience and dignity to lift themselves out of poverty in a sustainable way without needing ongoing charity.
The quote promotes the idea that the most effective anti-poverty strategy is to facilitate work and participation in the economy, not just rely on philanthropic goodwill.
