In this quote, Benjamin Franklin is making a wry observation about two inevitable aspects of life. He states that in the world, the only two things that can be said to be truly certain or unavoidable are “death and taxes.” Franklin is acknowledging that whereas many things are unpredictable or uncertain, two realities that all people everywhere must face are dying at some point and having to pay taxes to the government.

His message conveys that no matter what else may change or be unknown, death and having to pay taxes are universal constants. This quote is suggesting that in an unpredictable world, the only certainties are that life will end and that the government will require a share of one’s earnings through taxation.
