Put Women on Paper Currency
on Saturday, August 2, 2014New York Senator Shaheen asks President Obama to consider executive action to put a woman on the $20 Dollar Bill and reveals that a popular vote suggests Harriet Tubman.
“I want young girls across this country to look at our paper currency and know that they too can grow up and do something great for their country” — Jeanne Shaheen
In this quote, former New Hampshire Governor and U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen seems to be expressing her support for featuring prominent women on American paper currency. By stating she wants young girls to see currency bearing women’s images and feel they too could “do something great for their country”, Shaheen appears to believe this would serve as an inspiration and role model.
The quote conveys Shaheen’s view that exposing girls to images of accomplished women leaders on bills and coins could help cultivate aspirations of high achievement and public service from an early age. She seems to want the representation of women on paper money to empower young females and expand their vision of what they may one day be able to accomplish.
New York Magazine had previously mocked up a dozen women they suggest we consider putting on our currency and this is how they mocked up the Tubman Twenty Dollar bill:
New York magazine also tweeted this version of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginzburg $20 bill.
