Marian Wright-Edelman seems to be arguing that children learn charitable and philanthropic values from the example set by their parents. If parents do not donate or contribute any of their money to worthwhile causes that help others and their community, such as charities, colleges, religious institutions, and civic programs, then their children are unlikely to develop those values either and may not support such causes when they are older.

Her point is that children observe and emulate the spending priorities and charitable habits of their parents. Modeling philanthropic behavior through tithing or donations can instill compassion and service in children from an early age according to this view.
