Rutger Bregman is arguing that a universal basic income would provide people with very significant personal freedom and autonomy over their own lives. With a basic income ensuring their basic needs are met, people would gain the freedom to choose how to spend their time – whether that means starting a business, pursuing creative hobbies or volunteering, spending more time with family, or any other choice.

Rather than being forced to work primarily for economic survival, people could make life decisions based more on personal interests and priorities. So in Bregman’s view, a basic income endows individuals with the “most important freedom” to self-determine and self-direct their own path through life.
