This quote from Margaret Young suggests that many people have an incorrect view of what leads to happiness. They believe that if they have more money or possessions, then they will be able to do more of the things they enjoy, and as a result they will be happier.

However, Young argues that the actual relationship is the reverse – that doing more of the things you enjoy and finding purpose and meaning in life is what leads to happiness, and this happiness then motivates people to work harder and acquire more money and things.

So the best interpretation is that true happiness comes from actively living according to your values and purpose, not from passively acquiring wealth and possessions in the hopes that they will make you happy.
