C.S. Lewis seems to be suggesting that much of what traditionally defines human history – things like the pursuit of money, the existence of poverty, ambition, war, social classes and slavery – stem from humanity’s ongoing but futile search for meaning, purpose and fulfillment outside of a relationship with God.

Lewis characterizes it as mankind’s “long terrible story” of constantly trying to find happiness, contentment and satisfaction in worldly or material things like wealth, power over others, pleasure and social status, rather than recognizing that only God can truly satisfy the human spirit.

His quote portrays our species as having historically struggled and even harmed itself through repeatedly seeking non-spiritual substitutes to fill the hole that only God can fill, leaving humanity perpetually empty and in need of its Creator.
