Molly Crabapple is arguing that adopting policies like universal basic income and more open borders would undermine the criminal networks that profit from human trafficking and coercive sex work.
By providing all people with a basic income to meet their survival needs, it would reduce the economic desperation that can sometimes drive people into dangerous lines of work like sex trafficking. And by making it easier for people to move internationally, it could weaken the control that traffickers have over those they exploit across borders.
So in Crabapple’s view, these two policies could significantly “kneecap” or weaken the international traffickers who engage in modern slavery by reducing their ability to exploit vulnerable populations.
