Short Link to this Quote:
This quote suggests that different socioeconomic classes serve purposes related to one another’s perceptions and psychology, rather than necessarily reflecting natural or just hierarchies. It implies the middle class exists mainly to give the poor class something to aspire to and hope for through upward mobility.
Meanwhile, the poor class is meant to make the rich class feel superior and “special” by comparison. And the rich class serves to keep the middle class from feeling too arrogant or secure by reminding them of greater wealth above them. So in this view, class divisions are more about psychological effects and social control than economic realities alone.
The middle class were invented to give the poor hope; the poor, to make the rich feel special; the rich, to humble the middle class.
