Lucy Maud Montgomery is saying that achieving ambitions and goals comes at a cost or price. While ambitions are worthwhile to pursue, they do not come easily but rather require hard work, sacrifice, perseverance through difficult times like anxiety and setbacks.

In other words, there is no quick and easy path to realizing one’s dreams – success exacts “dues” in the form of diligent effort, self-discipline to delay gratification, and the ability to cope with challenges and doubts along the way.

Her quote suggests that everything in life that is attained or accomplished requires paying some type of price, and ambitions are among the most valuable pursuits but also demand the highest costs in terms of personal investment over time to achieve.
