Short Link to this Quote:
In this quote, Charlotte Bronte is saying that she does not need to compromise her principles or values in order to obtain happiness. She has an “inward treasure” which is her imagination, creativity, or spirituality that provides her with intrinsic joy and sustenance. Even if all external pleasures or “delights” were unavailable to her or could only be had by paying too high a “price,” she would still be able to find fulfillment from her inner resources.
The “price” she alludes to is likely selling her soul, or going against her conscience. So in essence, Bronte is expressing that she has inner strength and contentment that does not depend on material goods or compromising who she is. She cannot be bought or forced to do something that violates her integrity.
