“If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you’ll spend your life completely wasting your time. You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing, which is stupid” — Alan W. Watts

This quote from Alan W. Watts cautions against making the pursuit and accumulation of money the sole or primary focus of one’s life. The best interpretation is that if obtaining wealth is viewed as the ultimate goal or measure of success, it can lead one to spend their limited time on Earth doing work or activities they find unfulfilling simply to earn more money, so they can continue living to earn more money through more unenjoyable work.

Watts argues this is “stupid” because it results in a life spent wasting one’s time not pursuing meaningful goals, experiences and relationships. His message suggests we should instead direct our efforts towards passionate work, hobbies, social causes or other pursuits that add richness and purpose beyond financial gain alone, so that we spend our lives engaged in activities we find intrinsically rewarding and worthwhile.
